Waterfalls!
Leaving our little forest hideaway on the lake, we headed down to the wonder of nature that is the Columbia Gorge. The Columbia River flows over 1,200 miles from its source in the Rocky Mountains of British Columbia, through Oregon and Washington to the Pacific Ocean. At least six major rivers merge into it along the way. Remarkably, it is one of the only rivers in the world that cuts through a major mountain range. The Columbia River Gorge is 80 miles long and up to 4,000 feet deep in places. It is a spectacular and beautiful recreation area and we were excited to be revisiting it after a nine year absence. The best way to explore the gorge is along Hwy 35, the historic scenic byway. Completed in 1922, it was the first scenic byway built in the U.S. Much of it was replaced by U.S. Highway 84 in the 50s, but sections remain, including some of the original tunnels, like the Mitchel Point tunnel recently renovated.
